At H·Radar, we have identified a relevant signal linked to several chikungunya cases in travelers returning from Nosy-Be, Madagascar.
This signal would not be surprising if confirmed. In recent months, active chikungunya outbreaks have been reported in other islands of the southwest Indian Ocean—such as Réunion, Mayotte, and Mauritius—indicating regional circulation of the virus in an ecologically favorable environment with widely distributed vectors.
Diagnoses have been confirmed by PCR in various locations across Europe, all associated with recent travel to the island. Some of the cases share similar exposure histories and compatible symptoms, suggesting local transmission.
Although no official communication has yet been issued from the country of origin, this information reinforces the value of imported cases as early warning indicators.
