Historic increase in bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Europe in 2024

May 24, 2026

In 2024, Europe experienced record highs in bacterial STIs.

  • Gonorrhea saw 106,331 confirmed cases, a 303% increase since 2015 and 4.3% more than in 2023.
  • Syphilis reached 45,577 confirmed cases, doubling since 2015, with notable increases among heterosexual men and women of reproductive age. Cases of congenital syphilis nearly doubled, rising from 78 in 2023 to 140 in 2024, highlighting shortcomings in prenatal prevention.
  • Chlamydia, although the most reported STI with 213,443 cases, showed a 10% decrease compared to 2023.
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) saw 3,490 cases.

Barriers such as testing fees and outdated prevention strategies persist.
